Tulip Garden Amsterdam Opening Hours – Located in Lisse, Keukenhof is a seasonal garden that is home to millions of the most important Dutch flower: the tulip. The beauty of the land is a sight to behold, and at only 40 km from Amsterdam, it can be easily reached from the city. During a recent trip to the Netherlands, I got my husband to visit Keukenhof, and the focus of our time in the gardens, including how we got there and with what we did there.
After a quick breakfast of oatmeal in our hotel room, we left later than expected at 10:15 am for Keukenhof. We had reserved tickets with entry from 11:30 to 12:00 pm, so we knew we would have to run if we wanted to book. With this in mind, we chose to take the metro to the central station instead of walking, which was our first plan. Once at Centraal, we bought a train ticket to Schiphol Airport from one of the self-service shops located near the station entrance.

Unfortunately, Lady Luck didn’t look after us, because when we got to the train station, we found out that we just missed the train to Schiphol and had to wait 20 minutes for the next thing. The delay was that by the time we arrived at Schiphol, we only had 30 minutes to go to Keukenhof before we missed our reservation. We had planned to buy tickets at the airport for bus 858 to Keukenhof, but with limited time, this was not an option. So we hailed an Uber and paid €38 for the 20 minute ride to Keukenhof. We reached the fields with four minutes to spare.

If you are reading this post and you are planning a trip to Keukenhof, learn from our mistakes and give yourself a chance to visit the gardens. I would like to check the combi ticket; including access to Keukenhof and taking the gardens by car.
Upon entering Keukenhof, we were immediately greeted by a colorful display of tulips, and of course the beauty, which was a forerunner of what was to come. We walked through beautiful gardens filled with fountains, sculptures, and carefully arranged flowers before reaching the first visitor center, the building known as Juliana/Tulpomania. There, we grabbed a couple of much needed coffees, and blueberry muffins to tide us over until lunch.
We spent the next hour exploring the beautiful garden after garden (and taking bad pictures) as we made our way to the Wilhelmina house for lunch. I’m used to the lackluster nature of visitor centers in America, I was taken aback by the beauty of this one. It’s clean, spacious, and has a variety of food, including vegetarian options. I decided on a quinoa salad and found it to be very good.
Satisfied, we continued our tour of the gardens. It started to rain while we were eating our lunch, but we checked the forecast that morning and brought our umbrellas. Under his shadow, we continued walking through the fields for two hours.

Eventually, the rain stopped, and we grabbed ourselves a lunch of hand-cut, Belgian fries from a food truck. The fries tasted as good as they looked, and it didn’t take long for us to wolf them down.
We saw a few other gardens, and commercial tulip gardens nearby, before leaving Keukenhof. We also went into one of the gift shops to buy souvenirs to take home to our family.
Although we weren’t racing against the clock like that morning, we were able to get the car back to Amsterdam, and we saved some money. Since we bought return tickets to Amsterdam Centraal from Schiphol airport earlier that day, we took the 858 bus to Schiphol. We arrived at Schiphol about 30 minutes after leaving Keukenhof.
Tip — Keukenhof parking is to the right of the main entrance (exit through the main entrance, turn right, and walk until you see lines of people and signs for different cars). If you don’t have a bus ticket (that is, you haven’t bought a combi ticket), you can buy a ticket at the train station via the QR code, which is what we do.

Once at Schiphol, we went inside and went to the train station. There, we boarded our train to Centraal station, and from Centraal, we hopped on the train for one stop to our hotel.
By the time we got back to our hotel, it was a little past 5:00 pm; it’s been almost seven hours since we left for our tulip sightseeing day. Despite the crowds at Keukenhof, I really enjoyed my time there and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Netherlands in the spring.

The beautiful blooming of colorful tulips across the fields in the Netherlands is the latest sign that spring has arrived. Despite the cold start to the season, the latest flower display from one of the world’s largest tulip gardens promises a beautiful spring.
Keukenhof Gardens 2024
The famous Keukenhof Gardens, just 20 miles (32 km) outside of Amsterdam, are home to seven million unique tulips, and are now open for visitors to see the flowers up close.
“The tulips and hyacinths are already blooming. Visitors can enjoy a colorful park from day one. In the fall, Keukenhof gardens plant 7 million flowers by hand. On the other side of the Bollenstreek [growing region of the hill] the gardens are starting to bloom,” the Keukenhof flower exhibition said in a statement.
“2023 will be the biggest attraction for our international visitors,” Keukenhof director Jeroen Duyster said in a statement. “We look forward to receiving more visitors from around the world. Spreading our visitors mid-season will ensure maximum enjoyment for all and better accessibility.
Keukenhof opened for visitors last week, and will end its season on May 14. Tickets can be purchased on the host’s website. Entrance tickets are EUR 19.00 (USD 20) for adults, and EUR 9.00 (USD 9.78) for children 4-17 years old. The site also offers tickets for transportation to the attraction via boat or public transportation.
