Bus Amsterdam To Keukenhof Gardens – The most beautiful tulip fields in the Netherlands bloom in the Bollenstreek (flower region). This region is located between the large metropolitan cities of Amsterdam-Rotterdam and close to the seaside resorts of Katwijk and Noordwijk. The region is easily accessible by car and during the tulip season (21 March – 12 May 2024) there will be special Keukenhof buses from various towns and seaside resorts. Read our travel tips below.
The Bollenstreek (flower region) is centrally located between the cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam and is easily accessible by car. Thousands of colorful fields with flowers as far as the eye can see. At least that’s how I see spring when I think of the Netherlands. As soon as you buy your tickets to Amsterdam, someone will tell you to visit the Keukenhof Gardens. When I was planning my visit I read countless blogs on the internet claiming that this is the most beautiful garden in the world, an inevitable stop on your Netherlands itinerary blah blah blah. Of course I was determined to visit! However, my experience was quite disappointing. In this blog you will discover everything you need to know to visit the Keukenhof Gardens. This will help you better plan your visit and maybe decide to go somewhere else.
Before I tell you more about my experience, I will give you all the information you need to visit the gardens. That’s because I’m not her to tell you not to go without a reason. Indeed, it is still one of the most famous gardens in Europe! Therefore, you should have all the best information possible to plan your visit, regardless of my experience.
The Keukenhof Gardens are famous as the “Garden of Europe” and yet are one of the largest gardens in the world. It is located in the municipality of Lisse and covers an area of 32 hectares. Historically, the garden is located in the hunting grounds of the medieval Teylingen Castle, which Countess Jacoba van Beieren used for the castle’s kitchen. When in 1641 Keukenhof Castle was built, the estate grew to more than 200 hectares. Nevertheless, only in 1857 Keukenhof took its current form. In fact, architect Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher, who also designed Amsterdam’s Vondelpark, redesigned it as an English-style garden. The garden as we know it today was not opened to the public until 1950, when 20 leading flower bulb growers and exporters came up with a plan to use the estate to display spring flowering bulbs.
Since then, the garden has been opened every year to display the millions of flowers planted over the winter. It is estimated that about 40 gardeners plant about 7 million trees every year. bulbs donated by 100 flower bulb companies.
In my experience, a visit to the Keukenhof Gardens needs to be planned in advance. This is because tickets sell out easily and you can only visit the garden for a limited time. Therefore, a little advance planning is more than necessary (especially if you are traveling with small children).
A visit to the Keukenof Gardens is dictated by the unpredictable weather. In fact, there are two main issues that can affect your plans. First, the garden is only open for a short time each spring. Second, even in such a short period of time, it is not 100% guaranteed that you will see the garden in full bloom. The second problem is the one that affected our visit the most because the garden was only 30% in bloom when we visited, but that 30% of people were huge. This ruined our visit (along with other issues).

As this caused negative feedback from visitors, the management of Keukenhof has now introduced a full disclaimer, saying that the flowers bloom “in the way of nature”. Therefore, they cannot let you find what you paid dearly for. Nevertheless, it makes sense from a natural perspective. The administration should also “follow the course of nature” and open the garden only when there is something to see. Or at least introduce flexible pricing instead of charging visitors all $$$ just for green grass.

Keukenhof Garden in 2024 will be open from March 21 until May 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
One-time entrance ticket to the garden €19.50 per person. Please note that this does NOT include the bus transfer from Amsterdam (which you will most likely use).
Visit Keukenhof Gardens. Everything You Need To Know –
If you are traveling from Amsterdam and want to get to the Keukenhof Gardens, the only way (unless you have a car) is by their shuttle bus. In this case, you need to buy a combined ticket, which costs €36.50 per person. Children from 4 years old cost €17.50.
Remember to always choose your date and entry time carefully as this may affect your trip. If you’re traveling by car, you’ll need to buy a regular €19.50 ticket + €8 parking ticket.
Tickets purchased at the entrance gate are more expensive. Please note that the ticket does not include a boat trip to the tulip fields surrounding the gardens. This is an additional €10
If you are in Amsterdam, there are two ways to get to the Keukenhof Gardens. By car (35 minutes on the A4) or by bus.
How To Get To Keukenhof Gardens & What To Expect [2024] • Gorgeous Unknown
The bus to ride is not just an ordinary bus. In fact, you have to take the Keukenhof Express, which must be pre-booked and pre-paid together with the Keukenhof entrance ticket. From Amsterdam, the main boarding points are RAI station and Schipol Airport. Your boarding time will be shown on your ticket at the time of purchase. Don’t be late, or you risk being denied boarding.
You will not be the only passenger and you will have to stand in line for 15 to 30 minutes to get on the next available bus. We waited about 25 minutes. Especially since we had strollers and needed space on the bus. Due to the waiting line, plan your visit accordingly based on your garden entrance location.
The Keukenhof Express shuttle bus is also available for people departing from Haarlem or Leiden. Tickets in this case are €31.50.
Depending on what you have planned for your day, a visit to Keukenhof can take anywhere from 3 hours to most of the day. At first we planned a great day, but when faced with reality (I’ll tell you about my experience later) we didn’t come back until after lunch.
Visiting Keukenhof Gardens In 2024
As soon as you enter the gardens, you can pick up a map to get your bearings. It will look similar to the image above. As you can see, the garden is divided into different sections of pavilions that dictate what you will see.
You can choose to visit the gardens by checking out the different pavilions (there are 6 in total). I didn’t know what to expect from them, but they are basically giant flower shops with several flower displays. To be honest, I wasn’t particularly excited about them, and unless you’re super crazy about flowers, you’ll probably get the same impression. Also, we were sharing the space with thousands of other people at the same time and that probably didn’t help me appreciate those pavilions as much as I should have?
A good reminder when navigating the garden is that each pavilion usually has a shop, restaurant or bar and a toilet. So, if you need any of them, you can just drop by the nearest pavilion.
