On my last trip to the Netherlands, my Amsterdam 3-day itinerary was as open as I had no hope of zipping an overstuffed carryon. However, there were a few things I knew I really wanted to see: the Anne Frank House, a bicycle collision, someone so tall they were absolutely losing their minds, and TULIPS! (Check, check, and check!)
And for those, I’d take a quick and easy day trip from Amsterdam to the Keukenhof Flower Gardens in the town of Liege, one of the best tulip fields in the Netherlands.
Century and range from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) to the Middle East, North Africa, Greece and China.
Today, you can find them almost everywhere, especially in northwestern Europe and your local grocer, but nowhere more so than in the stomach contents of the families of deer that wander into my flower beds at night.

Tulips are seen as a cultural symbol of the Netherlands. In Turkish culture, tulips represent heaven on earth; In the Netherlands they represent the brevity of life.

Remember when Dorothy was imagining a place over the rainbow? Where do the happy little bluebirds fly and your dog will not be unfairly cheered? She believed that “it’s not a place you can get to by boat or train” and she was right. Only a Category F2 tornado, a rogue hot air balloon, or a quick bus ride from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport can get you there.
Tulip Fields In The Netherlands: The Ultimate Guide
Basically, if you want to see beautiful flower displays and fields and fields of colorful flowers while in the Netherlands, this is the place to be.
The Keukenhof Flower Gardens are located in the town of Lisse, just twenty minutes southwest of Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport (but about 40 minutes southwest of downtown Amsterdam).
The speed and ease of getting there make a trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof an ideal way to spend a spring day in the Netherlands. (Even a strawman for brains can do that, just by saying it.)
For starters, it’s easiest to get to Keukenhof from Amsterdam when you start from Schiphol Airport, so get yourself there first. It should be easy enough because it seems all roads lead to Schiphol. (Do I even need to reference the Yellow Brick Road here? Imma skip it.)

There are other ways to get to Keukenhof but, if you’re staying anywhere near central Amsterdam, this is by far the easiest, fastest and most direct route.
In Schiphol, look for the giant inflatable tulip. In fact, we told our taxi driver we were headed to Keukenhof and he dropped us off straight at the giant tulip. They really make it as easy as possible.
Since I had already checked out of my hotel and was going to Belgium after my day in Keukenhof, I had to store my luggage in Schiphol. (Yes, Keukenhof has a bag collection, but it’s very small. I’ll get to that.)
Now, yes, I was apprehensive about putting my bags in a locker at the train station. (I suffer a lot from post-traumatic train station stress disorder, or PTTSSD for short.) However, I had never been to Amsterdam before, my old land of auspicious…ome public transport—the most organized, cleanest. The cutest, most reliable of all train stations/airports.

This was no Rome Termini or Gare du Nord. This is a different color combination. So, I felt quite safe in my stocking.
From the big inflatable tulip, enter the airport and walk straight to the opposite end. Turn right and follow the yellow signs (of course they’re yellow!) leading down to the luggage area.
Back at the giant tulip you will see a truck with pictures of tulips on it. On this truck you can buy all round-trip bus tickets from Amsterdam to Keukenhof and back, as well as your Keukenhof entrance ticket. They call it Combiticket.
Don’t miss out on this ticket; Do not put it on the bus or otherwise misplace it. You just have to hold it for twenty minutes. I trust you.

Visiting Keukenhof is such a Dutch experience! Besides all the flowers, there’s also… a windmill and wooden shoes-clad, traditional Dutch dancers in traditional Dutch clothing with some boys riding traditional Dutch bicycles.
There are traditional Dutch beauties to greet you on arrival, and traditional Dutch herrings to eat on traditional Dutch benches by the traditional Dutch lake. Or whatever.
In short, a day trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof is the best possible way to absorb historically Dutch culture when you’re strapped for time in the Netherlands and more or less connected to Amsterdam.
What you need to know about the Keukenhof flower gardens is that they are only open for a short time each year. And I mean short… less than two months actually. (Tulips represent brevity in the Netherlands, remember?)
Keukenhof Tulip Festival & Gardens: 2024 Dates In Amsterdam
For 2022, Keukenhof is only open from March 24 to May 15, 2022. Meanwhile, it is open every day from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm.
(I’m gonna throw it out there that tornado season in Kansas is about the same time frame. Just saying.)

Where To Find The Best Tulip Fields In The Netherlands
Jeez, where do I start? Actually, let’s start with flowers. At Keukenhof, you can see almost every type of flower you can dream of. All sizes, shapes and colors, and by no means limited to tulips.
There are indoor pavilions with flowers, outdoor gardens, incredible flower arrangements all around the park, numerous flower shows and beyond. Additionally, there are five themed “Inspirational Gardens”:
There’s the Tulpomania exhibit, flower mosaics and walk of fame, and of course, the flower bulb shop! Want to feed your urban wildlife some food back home from the Netherlands? take it.
There is also a windmill that you can climb and talk to the caretaker about how windmills work. (This was serious news to me.) You can also get great views of the tulip fields from there.
Keukenhof Flower Gardens Near Amsterdam: The Complete Guide
There are performances and dances, mazes, large displays of artwork, and even baby animals. You can take a boat ride through the flower bulb fields, explore them by bike, or take a guided tour with a Keukenhof guide.
While this is a pretty self-explanatory day trip, there are a few things you should know before you go. See it:
As I said before, if you will be checking out of your hotel and/or going on another route afterwards, you will want to leave your luggage/large items at Schiphol.
Keukenhof has lockers you can rent for a few euros (which you get back later) but they are too small to fit in a suitcase. Their locker dimensions are 10″ x 21″ x 17″. You can fit a small bag in there, but no more.
