Most tulip fields are therefore set after 2 or 3 weeks of flowering, so that more energy goes into the flower bulb rather than the flower. In the Keukenhof gardens and in the tulip show gardens, the tulips are not cut back and therefore the tulips bloom there until mid-May.

It’s hard to believe that the coveted, glittering bulbs of Amsterdam were once the price of a decent house in 1636. Along with windmills, bicycles and canals, tulips are very much the centerpiece of Amsterdam’s image. April is the best time to enjoy these warm spring flowers, the fresh vibrant colors that indicate new beginnings and celebration at the end of winter. While tulips in the Netherlands are now cause for joy, they weren’t always this way. In the 16th and 17th centuries, a tulip frenzy caused quite a stir among early Dutch traders. We will see how an unassuming plant led to vandalism and bankruptcy, but first we need to travel a little further west towards the Ottoman Empire to really understand the origins of the tulip.
According to our resident historian in Amsterdam, Alette Fleischer, tulips originated on a mountain range that today spans Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. Mountain regions tend to be more isolated, so how did they get to the Netherlands? Nomadic tribes carried the bulbs and their seeds all over the area, their beauty eventually catching the attention of the Ottoman Empire. Tulips were a prized possession for the Ottomans, as were the Dutch later. From fashion to art, the fragrant flowers touched every part of Ottoman culture. In fact, the sultans wore tulips in their turbans, which is how the bulbs got their name.
Keukenhof Tulip Festival 2024: Europe’s Spring Garden
In the 16th century, the Dutch ambassador Olgier Gisleen van Busbeke came to visit Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Having never seen the delicate petals before, the ambassador pointed them out in the Sultan’s turban and asked what they were. The Sultan, thinking Van Busbeke was asking about his turban, replied that it was his “tulipani” or “turban” in Ottoman Turkish. Since then, the name tulip has stuck for this beautiful flower.
Fascinated with tulips from the beginning, the Flemish diplomat Olgier Gisleen van Busbeke took seeds from the Ottomans and brought them back to the Netherlands, where they changed the image of Amsterdam and the Netherlands forever. Olgier gave the seeds to a botanist named Carolus Clusius and he planted them in the Hortus Botanicus Leiden, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world (founded in 1587). It takes seven years for tulips to bloom and when they did, the Dutch took notice. The tulips were so tempting that early planters who populated the city with these colorful bulbs were vandals who stole the flowers from the botanical garden! Over time, honey-scented mulled wine became highly fashionable and the tulip industry became huge, especially during Holland’s remarkable period of economic success and colonial activity.
You may be familiar with the term tulip mania. It refers to the economic phenomenon where the prices of goods are inflated far beyond their value. In the 17th century, the Dutch experienced a growth in the wealth of their trade through the Dutch East India Company. The upper class had money to spend on extravagant things, and tulips were among the most sought-after luxury goods. From 1636 to 1637, the value of tulips rose to 12 times their normal value and then fell sharply. As a result, even wealthy merchants surrendered their payments to tulip guilders.
While the original tulip mania led to strained relations between buyers and sellers, the widely held belief that the Dutch economy suffered an economic collapse because of the plant is simply not true. The event was highly satirized, the Dutch made fun of themselves, which was quite a funny and strange phenomenon. Nevertheless, tulips prevailed in the Netherlands, permeating every area of culture. Art popularly depicted the beautiful flowers under the windmills of Amsterdam as seen through the paintings of Van Gogh and Claude Monet, soon steam engines would carry tulips across the ocean, and tourism arose in the Netherlands, bringing people near and far are well attracted to these balls of holiness. the present.

The lush and magical Keukenhof garden, the largest flower garden in the world, has been given the title “Garden of Europe” for good reason. Located about 35 minutes from Amsterdam in Lisse, Holland, these large grounds not only feature spiraling flower fields of all kinds, but also a castle, streams, and other hidden natural delights.
Although Keukenhof Castle was built in 1638, the 15th century grounds of the “Kitchen Garden” are the castle’s several hundred years ago. The use of the garden as a showground for bulb flowers began in 1950, an initiative of the Dutch bulb growers.
