A recent example is Eliud Kipchog, the first man to run a marathon under two hours at 12
October 2019. He didn’t do it alone. It was a carefully planned event that took years of preparation. It was attended by sponsors, coaches, training teams, the city of Vienna, 41 pacemakers and many others.

I think that’s why some people are afraid to ask for and accept help. They are afraid of being dependent on another person. They may even feel like they are seen, that is, they are now “given” to the other person.
Interdependence creates connection. With others. You know what? We humans thrive on it. Serious illness or injury and chronic illness can be very isolating. When we turn away from genuine support or offers of help that would actually help us, we can intentionally isolate ourselves. That’s why we don’t allow ourselves to stretch our limits.
When someone wants to help us, we know we matter. When we sincerely accept their help, they know they matter.
Knowing that we matter to someone else is a very reassuring experience. We assert ourselves. They recognized us. Witness. These are the things that make us respect ourselves.

When I ask for help, the other person says yes to help. (If we ask the right person to help us, that is, they are willing and able to help us.)
The person who gives is happy to help me. They know they are doing a good job. They feel good.

Accepting help is difficult for many people for the reasons I mentioned earlier. Sometimes those reasons are valid. Other times it is not. When they don’t, it’s often because of society’s assumptions about getting help, that it’s a sign of weakness to look too “suffocated” or incompetent, or to need help.

This disrupts the rhythm of acceptance and non-harmful health. We are done with this inequality in society, we have no place to give but no good to receive.
Going back to Eliud Kipchog’s example above, by giving and receiving help, you are allowing good things to happen. You are pushing the boundaries of what is possible for yourself and others.
