On my last trip to the Netherlands, my three-day Amsterdam itinerary was as open as an overstuffed carry-on that I couldn’t zip shut. You can find them just about anywhere these days—especially Northwest Europe and local grocery stores, but none more common than in the stomach contents of the cervids that sneak into my flower beds at night.

Keukenhof Gardens is located in the town of Lisse, just 20 minutes southwest of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (approximately 40 minutes southwest of Amsterdam city center).
Getting to Keukenhof from Amsterdam is quick and easy, making it an ideal way to spend a spring day in the Netherlands. (Even a scarecrow with straw for brains could do it, just saying.)
First off, it’s easiest to get to Keukenhof from Amsterdam when you’re departing from Schiphol Airport, so get there first. This should be fairly easy as all roads seem to lead to Schiphol Airport. (Do I even need to reference the Yellow Brick Road here? I’ll skip it.)
From Amsterdam: Keukenhof Gardens And Giethoorn Tour In Amsterdam
There are other ways to get to Keukenhof, but if you’re staying anywhere near the center of Amsterdam, this is by far the easiest, fastest and most direct route.
At Schiphol Airport, look for giant inflatable tulips. In fact, we told the taxi driver we were going to Keukenhof and he dropped us off at the giant tulips. They really make things as easy as possible.
Since I had already checked out and was heading to Belgium after spending the day at Keukenhof, I needed to store my luggage at Schiphol Airport. (Yes, there is luggage storage at Keukenhof, but it’s too small. I’ll get to that.)
Now, yes, I am concerned about storing my luggage in lockers at train stations. (After all, I do suffer from severe Post-Traumatic Train Station Stress Disorder (PTTSSD).) However, I’d never been to Amsterdam before, the amazingly jolly old country… Some public transportation – The most organized, cleanest, loveliest and most trustworthy of all train stations/airports.

Exit the Big Inflatable Tulip, enter the airport, and walk straight to the opposite end. Turn right and follow the yellow signs (yellow of course!) which lead downstairs to the luggage storage area.
Returning to the giant tulips, you’ll see a truck covered in pictures of tulips. On this truck you can buy an all-in-one round trip bus ticket from Amsterdam to Keukenhof and back, as well as Keukenhof tickets. They call it Combiticket.
Do not lose this ticket; do not leave it on the bus or otherwise misplace it. You just need to hold on for twenty minutes. I trust you.

Just a few steps away from the ticket car is the bus from Amsterdam to Keukenhof. It is also covered and surrounded by tulips.

One thing you must know about the Keukenhof Gardens is that they are only open for a short period of time each year. I mean briefly…less than two months actually. (Tulips represent simplicity in the Netherlands, remember?)

OMG, where do I start? Actually, let’s start with the flowers. At Keukenhof you can see just about every variety of flower you can think of. All sizes, shapes and colors, and not limited to tulips at all.
There are indoor pavilions with flowers, outdoor gardens, incredible floral arrangements throughout the park, multiple flower displays, and more. In addition, there are five themed “Inspiration Gardens”:

There is also a windmill that you can climb up and talk to the ranger about how the windmill works. (This was serious news to me.) You also get a great view of the tulip fields from there.

There are performances, dances, mazes, large art displays, and even small animals. You can take a boat ride through the flower bulb fields, explore them by bike, or take a guided tour from the Keukenhof.
While this is a pretty self-explanatory day trip, there are a few things you should know before you go. Verify:
As I said before, if you are checking out and/or subsequently traveling elsewhere, you will need to store your luggage/large items at Schiphol Airport.
Keukenhof does have lockers that you can rent for a few euros (which you can return later), but they are too small to fit suitcases. Their lockers measure 10” x 21” x 17”. You can probably fit a small backpack in there, but that’s about it.
