Keukenhof was originally a sought-after destination for Eline, Countess of Hainaut in the 15th century. Later it became a lawn for herbs and vegetables for the kitchen of Teilingen Castle. In the 19th century, the garden was redesigned by landscape architects and turned into a park with large trees, ponds and winding paths. The park was opened to the general public in 1949 and since then it has become a popular holiday destination for tourists from all over the world.

An Insider’s Guide On How To Visit Keukenhof In 2024

After an impromptu milky breakfast at our hotel, we left for Keukenhof at 10:15 a.m. later than planned. We booked timed tickets from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm so we knew we had to hurry if we booked in advance. With that in mind, we decided to go to Centraal Station instead of taking the metro, which was our original plan. Once at Centraal, we bought a round-trip train ticket to Schiphol Airport from one of the self-service kiosks near the station entrance.

Unfortunately, Lady Luck wasn’t looking out for us because when we got to the train platform, we found that we had just missed the train to Schiphol and had to wait 20 minutes for the next passenger. This delay meant that by the time we got to Schiphol, we had over 30 minutes to get to Keukenhof before we were booked. We had planned to buy tickets at the airport for the 858 bus to Keukenhof, but with so little free time, that was no longer possible. So we hailed an Uber and paid £38 for the 20 minute ride to Keukenhof. It took us four minutes to reach the gardens.

If you’re reading this post and planning a trip to Keukenhof, learn from our mistake and spend more time in the gardens. I would also recommend looking into the combi ticket; it includes entrance to Keukenhof and bus transport to and from the gardens.

When we entered the Keukenhof, we were immediately greeted by a colorful display of flowers and, amazingly, it was the beginning of things to come. We passed through several beautiful gardens filled with fountains, statues, and artistically decorated flowers before reaching the first hotel known as the Juliana/Tulpomania building. There we grabbed some much-needed coffees to last us through lunch, as well as blueberry muffins.

Guided Tour To Keukenhof And Zaanse Schans From Amsterdam

We explored (and took tons of photos of) stunning garden after garden as we headed to the Wilhelmina Building for lunch the next hour. As I got used to the more relaxed nature of visitor centers in America, I was struck by how nice this man was. It was clean, spacious and had plenty of food options, including several vegetarian options. I sat on the quinoa salad and found it to be very good.

We sat down and started exploring the gardens. It started to rain while we were having lunch, but luckily we checked the forecast that morning and brought an umbrella. Under his shelter, we continued to roam the gardens for the next few hours.

Finally, the rain stopped, and we grabbed a hand-cut Belgian fry from a food truck for lunch. They tasted just like the baked ones, and it didn’t take long to dress them up.

Before leaving the Keukenhof, we saw a few more gardens, as well as the adjacent shopping malls. We went into one of the gift shops to buy a few souvenirs to take home to our families.

Since we weren’t racing against the clock that morning, we took the bus back from Amsterdam and saved some money. Given that we had bought a return ticket from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Centraal earlier that day, we boarded bus 858 to Schiphol. We arrived at Schiphol about 30 minutes after leaving Keukenhof.

Useful information – the bus stop at Keukenhof is to the right of the main entrance (exit through the main entrance, turn right and walk until you see the lines of people and the signs for the different buses). If you don’t have a bus ticket (ie you haven’t bought a combi ticket), you can buy a ticket at the bus stop, which is what we do.

Once inside Schiphol, we made our way to the train platforms. There we took the train to Centraal station and from Centraal we took one stop on the metro to get to our hotel.

By the time we got back to our hotel, it was a little after 5:00 pm; It’s been about seven hours since we left for our day of trekking. Despite the crowds at Keukenhof, I still enjoyed my time there and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone visiting Holland in the spring.
