In this issue of Glencairn Museum News, we present the full catalog for our current exhibition, which runs until 5 May 2024: Easter Eggs: Symbols of Rebirth and Renewal. Showcasing one of Pennsylvania’s most colorful and beloved traditions, Easter Eggs are a collaborative effort. between the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center and the Glencairn Museum at Kutztown University. The exhibition is co-curated by Heritage Center Director Patrick J. Donmoyer and Glencairn Museum Curator Ed Gyllenhaal.

Featuring an unparalleled array of historic and contemporary Easter eggs, along with related artifacts, documents and ephemera, Easter Eggs traces the origins, history and cultural diversity of Pennsylvania’s unique contributions to Easter traditions in North America.
Why Do We Celebrate Easter With Eggs?
This is the third joint exhibition between Glencairn and the Heritage Centre. First, in 2017, Powwowing in Pennsylvania: Healing Rituals of the Dutch Country (see here for exhibition catalog). For centuries, the egg has captured the imagination of people in cultures and religions of the world as a symbol of the mystery of creation and the reawakening of the earth in spring. Among the oldest surviving examples of human artistic traditions, decorated eggs have played an important and perennial role in folk-cultural traditions and religious expressions to this day. Although the earliest written evidence of decorated eggs for the Christian celebration of Easter dates back to the Middle Ages, the tradition was not simply a spontaneous development, but one that was shaped and influenced by a wide range of cultural practices throughout human history.
In the same way, Pennsylvania’s vibrant Easter egg traditions emerge from a mosaic of diverse communities in America that have shaped and been shaped by the broader transatlantic immigrant culture. The origins of decorating, blessing, and eating eggs as part of the religious celebration of Easter in Pennsylvania can be traced back to the arrival of several waves of immigrant groups beginning in the eighteenth century. Today, Easter eggs have become an American tradition everywhere. Pennsylvania was the gateway for these traditions to enter North American culture, and continues to play an important role as these cultural expressions evolve and as new generations of Americans rediscover and explore their roots.

Traditional Pennsylvania Dutch Scratched Goose Egg, Pennsylvania, Nineteenth Century, Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center, Kutztown University. This goose egg features an intricate arrangement of floral and bird motifs, representing one of the finest surviving Pennsylvania Dutch scratched eggs from the nineteenth century. Jr., of York, Pennsylvania, who began collecting it in the 1920s and became an influential expert on the material culture of the Mid-Atlantic. Preserved by Joseph Kindig.
German-speaking immigrants to Pennsylvania first established a robust Easter egg tradition in North America.
This transatlantic immigration gave rise to popular Easter traditions that many Americans cherish today—decorated eggs, the Easter bunny, Easter baskets, and egg hunts—all of which combined sacred and secular elements in modern celebrations of spring. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the migration of families from Central and Eastern Europe brought their own unique Easter egg expressions to the Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania and to urban centers such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. For more than three centuries, these traditions continue to flourish and flourish in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Human cultures have long admired the beauty and perfection of the egg, and marveled at the emergence of new life from the shell in the spring. Long before eggs became associated with Easter, this mystery of nature came to represent new life and the reawakening of the earth each spring as a sacred symbol. The egg’s three-part structure, uniform round shell, watery protein, and bright yellow yolk have inspired stories of the creation of the earth, oceans, and sun in many religious traditions. The miraculous womb of the cosmic egg from which all life originates is a concept found in myths and sacred texts throughout human history.

The oldest known written record of the mythological cosmic egg from which all life on Earth originated is an ancient Egyptian manuscript from the New Kingdom (1580-1085 BCE) that praises the world egg that emerged from the waters of nothingness during eight primeval times. gods: “O Egg of the waters, source of the earth, product of the Eight, great in the sky and great in the underworld. . . I came out of the water with you, I came out of your comfort together with you.”
In the egg was the god Atum, who created the world from a mound of earth rising from the waters of chaos.
In other versions of this creation story, the sun god who hatches from the egg is Re.
Others believe that the world egg was laid by the goose known as the “Great Cackler” or an ibis associated with the god Geb or Thoth.
Why Is Easter Associated With Bunnies And Eggs?
Ancient Egyptian ceramic egg in the Glencairn Museum collection, origin and date unknown. Formerly part of the museum of the Academy of the New Church for at least a century, this egg-shaped ceramic object from the Egyptian collection at Glencairn Museum raises questions for researchers. It may be an egg-shaped juglet with a broken spout. However, its distinctive egg shape may have symbolic meaning. According to two different versions of the Egyptian creation myth, the world-shaping god was born from a Cosmic Egg laid by either a celestial goose (known as the “Great Cackler”) or an ibis associated with the god Thoth.
The Egyptian Book of the Dead contains many poetic allusions to the cosmic egg: “I have guarded this egg of the Great Cackler. If he grows, I will grow; if he lives, I will live; if he breathes air, I breathe air.’
Significantly, the cosmic egg of the beginning of the world also appears in these funerary texts, serving as a guide to the souls in the afterlife. This is one of many instances in human history where eggs have played a role not only in the symbolism of creation, but also in the hope of death and rebirth.

(Japanese Chronicles) describes a similar creation story from AD 720 in which the undifferentiated female and male principles, In and Yo, form a cosmic egg that separates to form the heavens and the earth.
Likewise, in some variations of the Orphic creation myths of the ancient Greeks, the cosmic egg splits into two halves, forming the earth and the sky.
Do Passover Eggs And Easter Eggs Have A Shared Origin?
The poetry of the Orphic tradition describes a watery abyss at the beginning. Embodied as a serpent or dragon and actuated by Necessity, Ether creates and with Chaos gives birth to the cosmic egg. Serpent Time squeezes the egg and hatches Phanes, the radiant creator god, both male and female, who gives birth to the gods and thus to all creation.
It was the ubiquitous notion of a cosmic egg that united the feminine and masculine forces, and thus all material existence, that inspired philosophers and later alchemists to conceive of this.

A Journey Through Easter Traditions And The Fun Activities To Celebrate
The Modena relief is believed to be a Roman syncretic work of the second century AD, most likely identifying the Orphic god Fanis with the sun god Mithras, hatched from the cosmic egg.
Archaeologists have long observed parallels between the stories of Mithras and Jesus, observing their birth on December 25.
Perhaps the most unexpected of these examples is the carved stone fountain in Alsleben bei Zerbst, Germany.
