Blistex Makes Lips Peel – Chapped lips are a sign of an unhealthy skin barrier. To repair the damage, dermatologists emphasize the importance of finding lip balms with humectants, occlusives and emollients.
Chapped lips are a fact of life for many, especially when the weather changes. Dry air with extreme heat or cold causes moisture to leak from the skin, causing dryness and cracking – especially on the lips, where the skin becomes thinner. “In the winter, the humidity in the air is low and the cold air draws moisture from the skin,” says Dr. Kiran Mian, board-certified dermatologist at Hudson Dermatology and Laser Surgery in New York City.

The best way to prevent chapped lips, according to the board-certified dermatologists we spoke to, is to target the causes by keeping your body and environment hydrated whenever possible. (That means drinking lots of water and buying a humidifier.) To treat existing dryness and prevent excess moisture loss, you’ll need a lip balm. But not all lip hydrators are created equal, says Carmen Castilla, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at the New York Dermatology Group in Manhattan. “The most important thing is to make sure you’re applying the right kind of lip care,” she says.
Everything You Need To Know About Being Addicted To Lip Balm

No one is immune to chapped lips, says Mian, even those with oily skin. To prevent and treat chapped lips this winter, the experts we spoke to stressed the importance of finding a lip balm that works well for you. Here are some things to keep in mind:
To help you prevent and treat dry lips this winter, we asked board-certified dermatologists for their personal favorite lip balms, masks, and chapsticks. We also included a handful of NBC selection staff favorites.
Blistex Ultra Lip Balm Spf 50+ 4.25gm Stick
All four dermatologists we spoke to recommend good old-fashioned Vaseline. “It’s an OG product for chapped lips,” says Castilla. Pure petroleum jelly is fragrance-free, non-irritating, and a great lock-in, according to Castilla. “It locks in that moisture and is good to use morning or night,” she says. .
Another classic formula — and a favorite of NBC Select Update editor Mili Godio — is Aquaphor. She swears by the simple formula, which has chamomile extract that helps soothe irritated lips, according to the brand. “It provides perfect hydration and moisture, especially in the winter months,” says Godot.
“Dehydration and Acctane have turned me into a lip balm fan,” says NBC Select editorial director Lauren Swanson. “I carry this in every bag I have and keep one at my desk.” Lanolips Golden Dry Skin Miracle Salve is a heavy, “taffy-like goo” that delivers serious moisture and is ideal as a lip mask, according to the brand. Its antioxidant vitamin E and antibacterial manuka honey help heal any breakouts. For an easier application, “warm the balm with your fingertips to make it smoother on your lips,” says Swanson.
While she prefers thicker peels for stubbornly dry lips, Swanson also likes Glee’s lightweight formula for its layerability. “I like to use Ghlee lip balm (with great, delicious flavors) under a thicker product like Aquaphor or Lanolips,” she says. “Ghlee is very smooth with no stickiness.”
Can Lip Balm Make Your Chapped Lips Worse?
For those who prefer a Chapstick-like formula, King likes the Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter Stick. Its formula checks all the hydration boxes: Glycerin (an emollient) helps smooth skin with Vitamin E (which acts as an emollient and humectant) and that moisture is sealed in with oxic petroleum jelly, shea butter, cocoa butter and beeswax.
Sun damage “can really tear the lips,” says Navin Arora, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Borealis Dermatology in New York. That’s why he recommends EltaMD’s balm, which has broad-spectrum protection. “It’s also water-resistant, so if you’re going on a ski trip or hike in the winter, this would be great,” he says. “It will really protect you in different environments.”
Although not technically a lip balm, Cerve’s All-In-One Healing Balm is a favorite of both Mian and Castilla for helping chapped lips. Like Vaseline, it’s based on pterotatum, but benefits from the addition of ceramides, which help repair the skin’s barrier, says Mian. “I love it because it’s good for so many places—your lips, your cleavage, the corners of your eyes, the corners of your nose,” she says. For really chapped lips, she recommends layering over a light balm and using this at night.
For mild dryness with a bit of shine, Swanson is a fan of U Beauty’s Lip Compound. It has alpha hydroxy acids and salicylic acid to exfoliate dry skin, ceramides to repair, and shea butter and beeswax to lock in moisture. “I like the clear option, but I think the star of the show is the color variants. They have a subtle tint while being moisturizing,” Swanson says.
Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment
For chronic chapping, Arora likes Blistex’s herbal lip balms, especially the Repair and Protect formula. It also has 45% petrotatum, in addition to other auxiliaries including beeswax, shea butter and lanolin, making it “one of the best when you have thick cracks or chronic dryness.”
NBC Select product coordinator Kelsey Fredricks says, “Rosebud’s salves leave my lips feeling smooth and hydrated, even when they’re dry. The petrolatum-based formula is versatile; you can use it on lips, hands, or anywhere else you deal with dry skin. “I apply it whenever I want a little shine, but don’t want to reach for a gloss or matte lip product,” says Fredericks.
For a luxurious option, King Charlotte likes Tilbury’s Magic Lip Oil Crystal Elixir. Unlike some deliberately simple formulas on this list, Magic Lip Oil has a stacked list of ingredients: a blend of hydrating humectants and emollients that help repair damaged skin barriers, King says. She especially appreciates the addition of emollient shea oil
Who says chapped lips have to be boring? For a splash of color, King recommends Colorescience’s Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50, which comes in six shades: Blush, Berry, Bronze, Pink Sky, Violet Haze, and Golden Hour. In addition to erasing color, this stick-based balm offers protection from UVA and UVB rays and blue light, which can further damage lips. The formula has antioxidants to protect against free radicals and squalane to provide moisture, King says.

It’s no surprise that dermatologist-loved brand La Roche Posay makes a lip balm backed by experts. Castilla especially likes the matte finish of this formula. “It’s not as greasy as Vaseline, but it’s still hydrating,” she says. “It’s more creamy and ends up with a matte finish when you rub it in.” It’s perfect for those who don’t want to look like they’re wearing anything.
For those who can’t imagine going a day without lipstick, Castilla recommends using this as a primer. “It rubs on clear and works well if you’re going to put lipstick on it,” says Castilla. It is fragrance free making it a good choice for very sensitive lips.
The experts we spoke to emphasized the importance of finding a lip care formula that works for you. In addition to choosing a formula with the right blend of moisturizers, avoid potential irritation. Before you buy, consider the following factors:
As a general rule, simpler is better when it comes to products for treating chapped lips. “There are many products on the market and some of them can be very irritating,” says Castilla. Added ingredients can increase the risk of touching your lips with something that could irritate already damaged skin. Castilla says to be careful with cooling agents like camphor and menthol. “They provide a nice cooling sensation, but they can lead to dry, irritated skin,” she says. She also recommends avoiding perfumes if you have sensitive skin.

Finding a non-irritating balm may require a little trial and error. “Some people may be perfectly fine using Burt’s Beeswax, which contains menthol, but for other people, that product may be more irritating,” says Mian. If you’ve been using a balm for a few days and don’t see an improvement (or worsening dryness), consider switching to something gentler.
Environmental factors – cold air, low humidity, indoor heat – are the biggest culprits that cause dry skin in winter.
However, lip biology also plays a role. Lips don’t have oil glands like the rest of the skin, so they’re especially susceptible to dryness, King explains. On top of that, the skin on the lips is thin, meaning
