What Do Dragonflies Symbolize – I have encountered countless dragonflies throughout my life, simply because I grew up going to the James River every spring and summer. Whether I was swimming, floating listlessly downstream in a tube, or jumping into hills, dragonflies were always in sight. For me, it was not strange to see them. However, dragonflies are known for staying near bodies of water such as rivers, ponds, and lakes, especially during the summer months. However, other people have not encountered the beautiful flying insect (and predator) and are therefore curious to find out the true meaning of the dragonfly.
To help shed some light on the glowing insects, we chatted with renowned psychologist and mystic Inbaal Honigman about the meaning of dragonflies. Read on to find out what he had to say.
What Do Dragonflies Symbolize
One might think that the meaning of dragonfly is ominous thanks to the insect’s predatory nature (as adults, they eat other insects and are highly skilled at hunting their own meals). However, according to Honigmann, dragonflies represent a positive moment of transformation.
Bible Mysteries: What Does A Dragonfly Symbolize In The Bible?
“As a very slender creature, with almost transparent wings, it characterizes the lightness of a dragonfly,” says Honigmann. “They have an otherworldly quality, almost hallucinatory – are they really here? Blink and you’ll miss them.”
With this in mind, one can speculate that seeing a dragonfly is a reminder to seize opportunities as they arise, as you never know how long they will be around as the world (and your place within it) changes. Along these lines, Honigman says dragonflies represent hope, new beginnings, potential and luck, and are a wonderful reminder to live each day as if it were your last. “Make the most of every moment,” he says. You never know when it will happen
Now, if the dragonfly lands directly on you, it’s even more noticeable, because it’s not just a short-term reminder to be more present, but a direct nudge to be present. Of course, if you’ve ever been around dragonflies, you might know that they can bite. While their bite is not considered dangerous and often does not even break the skin, they can sting (I speak this from first hand experience). It is said that even a dragonfly sting has a meaning. “It can indicate a fear of change,” says Honigman. Since dragonflies are a symbol of transformation, the sting could be your unease at the idea of changing your life.
It is not uncommon to see dragonflies flying together, as they are a breed of insect known to swarm (ie: fly in swarms to prey on other insects). While this is a perfectly natural occurrence, the testimony is remarkable, says Honigman. “Seeing a bunch of dragonflies enhances the meaning of a dragonfly,” he explains. “Its spiritual meaning is transformation, and making the most of what you have, multiplying, and so the message becomes clearer.”
Everything You Need To Know About The Symbolism And Spiritual Meaning Of A Red Dragonfly
If you’re not directly on or especially near water, but you keep seeing dragonflies, Honigman says the message is trying to get across loud and clear. “If you’re seeing dragonflies over and over again, it might be because you’re being asked to make a change in your life, to transform yourself,” he says. (which is similar to the meaning of royal butterfly). “The more you ignore the message, the more it will appear. If you’re seeing dragonflies at an unusual rate, you may have been ignoring the messages for a while, so sit back and think – where does that need to change? What transformation can you make for yourself?” To benefit your life?

As we search the scriptures, we must acknowledge that dragonflies are not explicitly mentioned in the Bible. However, this absence does not diminish their importance in God’s creation or their potential to teach us valuable spiritual lessons.
We must remember that the Bible, while divinely inspired, was written in a specific historical and cultural context. The authors focused primarily on flora and fauna familiar to the people of the ancient Near East. Dragonflies, although present in many parts of the world, may not have been particularly important to the biblical writers or their direct audience.
However, this absence invites us to broaden our perspective and consider how God speaks to us not only through His written word but also through the book of nature. As we read in Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God. The heavens declare the work of his hands.” Every aspect of creation, including the humble dragonfly, is evidence of the wisdom and artistry of the Creator.
