What Do Pink Flamingos Mean – What is the history and story of the plastic pink flamingo? Often you’ll see them as decorations at vintage trailer rallies and they’re an icon of the 1950s for some. But where did they come from and how did they become a symbol of the 1950s? And do they have a hidden meaning?
The iconic plastic pink flamingo was originally created in 1957 by Don Featherstone at Union Products in Massachusetts. At the time the company had two-dimensional ducks and flamingos and Featherstone’s first product was a three-dimensional version of the duck followed by a three-dimensional one. Pink flamingo
What Do Pink Flamingos Mean
Flamingos took off in 1957 with pink being a very popular color and helping to deodorize the growing number of tract homes at the time. For $2.75 you could put two of these in your yard and really stand out and lots of people did. Other lawn icons of the era included tiki statues and lighthouses.
Unveiling The Secrets Of The Flamingo Spirit Animal: Symbols, Totems,
There was a backlash against them in the 1960s as the hippies and counterculture rejected the pink flamingo. But in the 1970s they returned thanks to film director John Waters
Although 1972 wasn’t about flamingos themselves, it featured a trailer park and a mobile home decorated with two birds.
The original is about drag queens and some say it may be one of the most offensive pictures of all time.
But it celebrated drag queens and became campy and iconic while becoming massive in the gay community. Gay bars and drag shows have adopted the icon such that it appears as a campy symbol on earrings, shoes and all manner of fashion.
Do Not Be A Pink Flamingo…
By the mid-1980s the pink flamingo finally overtook the duck in Union products, partly due to the popularity of the TV show.
. In the early 1980s pinks and flamingos were big and, thus, pink flamingos were once again a popular lawn ornament.
Eventually pink flamingos became part of the larger community and prank culture where people would put them on other people’s lawns as a joke. In 1979, over 1,000 pink flamingos lined the front lawn of the dean’s office in Madison, Wisconsin. Years later they paid tribute to him where the city council named the pink flamingo the official bird of Madison.
This leads to what is called flocking where an organization will flood your lawn with tons of birds with a sign. That sign informs you that, in order to make a donation to a particular charity, the birds will be removed. Our local Rotary Club has been doing this for a while and it’s a lot of fun.

There are many rumors and legends surrounding the pink flamingo for a small plastic lawn ornament.
One of them is that people who put them on their lawns are swingers. It leads to RV parks where you’ll see decorations outside of campers. There is no actual information that I have to back this up as anything more than an urban legend.
Originally Don Featherstone added his signature to bird molds to prevent other companies from copying them. Surprisingly, it continued until 2001 when it was finally removed. However buyers rebelled against unsigned birds so the feature was put back.
Surprisingly, in 1996 Featherstone was awarded the Nobel Art Prize for the composition and became president of Union Products until his retirement in 2000.

In November, 2006, Union Products closed shop and ceased production of the Flamingo. Fortunately for all of us a New York company bought the molds and copyrights and continues to manufacture them to this day.
