What Does Seeing A Red Cardinal Symbolize – A man from Fullow, England, has been spending time in his backyard for the past three years, getting various birds to warm to him. Now they fly to his hand as he feeds them from his hand. Check out the amazing moment!

Cardinals have always had a deep spiritual meaning dating back to when they were first named.

“When European settlers arrived in North America, they noted the bright red hue of these birds and how closely it resembled the red robes of Roman Catholic leading bishops,” reports the Farmer’s Almanac.

Red Bird Symbolism And Meaning: A Spiritual Perspective

“And the bird’s jaunty crest is similar in shape to the churchmen’s hats, especially the tall, pointed miter.”

The bright hue transcends the pointed adornments of the Catholic Church. “The red color of the cardinal is seen as a symbol of the blood of Jesus Christ,” said Fr. Jeffrey Kirby, pastor of Our Lady of Grace in Indian Land, South Carolina, told Fox News Digital.

The name cardinals was brought back when early settlers compared the bird’s red hue and high crest to the red robes and hats worn by the cardinals of the Catholic Church. Shown here: a male cardinal.  (iStock)

“In the Christian faith, it is the blood of the Lord Jesus that has opened the gates of heaven for mankind.”

Symbolism Of The Cardinal Bird: What It Means When You See One

It is because of this religious connection that many believe that a cardinal’s visit serves as a sign or heavenly message from a deceased loved one.

The festive color of the cardinal – males are bright red, while females are usually pale brown, with warm reddish hues on the wings, tail and crest – brings a great sense of joy to many when they see the bird.

“Such an encouraging presence of cardinals in moments of sorrow has become a cultural association of the birds with hope and the presence of our loved ones who have died,” Fr. Kirby continued.

Cardinal Experiences — Caring Cardinals

Many people have noticed the presence of a cardinal when burying a loved one or in times of great grief associated with a deceased family member.

This common occurrence can mean that a loved one is near – and that you will always be loved by that person.

“People often report seeing cardinals frequently after their loved ones die,” according to CaringCardinals.com.

Cardinals As ‘messengers From Heaven’: What Does It Mean When You See This Beautiful Red Bird?

“Seeing a cardinal for the first time or more often than usual can be an indication from your loved ones that they will always feel your love and be close to you.”

Fr. Kirby again pointed to the religious significance of the cardinal or birds in general by looking at Matthew 10:29-31.

“Are not two sparrows sold for a denarius? But none of them will fall to the ground without your father. And even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows,” reads the passage from the Holy Scriptures.

Cardinal Meaning & Symbolism: The Ultimate Guide

“If God could use a sparrow, surely He could use a cardinal. It is very possible that God will send a cardinal to someone who is grieving and devastated,” said Fr. Kirby continued.

Although the cardinal may not be your loved one incarnate – it may be a physical manifestation of God’s providence that you can see.

The next time you see a cardinal, it could be God sending you a message from a dear deceased loved one, the priest suggested.

Cardinals: Beauty, Loyalty, Tradition And Luck

“God’s providence could allow a bird to serve us as a sign and reminder of the presence of our loved ones and their kindness and care towards us,” said Fr. Kirby. With Halloween over, it’s officially time to start planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas. As the holiday season approaches, I get excited about spending time with family and friends and decorating my home for the holidays. (yes!!)

When I think of Christmas, my head and heart are so full! I love to experience and enjoy Christmas traditions and holidays with all the people I love. If you know me, you know I’m a complete bird geek, so it probably comes as no surprise to learn that one of my favorite signs of the season is a bright red cardinal bird. I live in Illinois and cardinals are our state birds, so I see them all the time; almost every time I look out the window, actually! Their gorgeous red feathers stand out especially well on a snowy or gray winter day and never fail to grab my attention and brighten my mood. They are one bird you really cannot miss!

Cardinals are known to represent faith, hope and love, which is one reason why they are often found on holiday decorations such as greeting cards, wall decorations, pillows, wrapping paper, ornaments and more. I draw them often and have used them as a theme in several of my Christmas prints.

Another reason for my interest in cardinals is that some people and cultures see them as spiritual messengers or even angels. There is a saying that goes,

What Seeing A Male And Female Cardinal Together Means Spiritually

Which may be taken from this wonderful quote by Victoria McGovern found in this poem about what it means when you see a cardinal outside your window:

Look out for the little red bird – it’s there, your loved one will be.”

The belief that cardinals are messengers of the spirit is not new. The word “Cardinal” comes from the Latin word “cardo” which means “hinge or door”. So the bird was literally named as a representation of a door between the spirit world and the earth. Pretty cool, right?

What Does It Mean When You See A Red Cardinal

According to wikinut.com, “The Cardinal is nicknamed the ‘Christmas Bird’ because of its striking red color. Legend has it that the cardinal is a symbol of the beauty and warmth of the holiday season. One look at this brilliant bird brings cheer, hope and inspiration on a gray winter day. It is nature’s reminder to us to focus on our faith; the scarlet plumage of the cardinal represents the blood of Christ shed for the redemption of mankind.

Cardinals also represent virtue, love, responsibility and balance. Believe it or not, they are monogamous birds and mate for life, which can last up to 15 years in the wild. I mean, who even knew monogamy in birds was a thing?! If you see a male or female, you will undoubtedly see their mate somewhere nearby. They seem to really enjoy each other’s company and repeat their songs and chirps as they follow each other. It’s so cute! I’ve even witnessed cardinal “couples” at my bird feeder fetching each other food. This obvious “love” and partnership that cardinals show explains why Native Americans believe that seeing a cardinal can mean you’re in for a romantic date!

Knowing and sharing stories like these helps us not only enjoy the season, but also allows us to share and connect with one another in truly meaningful ways.  Giving gifts or decorating our homes with memories and decor that tell a story make the holidays a time to connect with each other on a deeper level. I mean, this is the holidays after all, am I right?

What Does Seeing A Red Cardinal Symbolize

Well, whatever you believe about cardinals, angels, or Christmas, you can’t deny that it’s truly delightful to look outside and see a beautiful red cardinal or hear its joyful song and playful chirping. And if you want to believe he’s a messenger from a lost loved one, I can’t think of a better way to do it.

The Mystery Of The Red Bird. There’s A Popular Superstition That…

The next time you see a cardinal outside your window, remember a lost loved one and smile. They may have just sent you a message of love and hope through this adorable little bird. Or if you’re single, the cardinal can foretell that someone special is waiting for you just around the corner.

So my friend, I encourage you to take a moment and really try to be mindful of the season. Decorating and giving gifts with a special story or meaning can help you build holiday traditions and create special memories and moments for you and your family that you can share and revisit over and over again.
