Unsweetened cranberry juice is sour, just like unsweetened lemon juice. To turn homemade lemonade pink, all we need to do is add some cranberry juice to the mix.
We make simple syrup by heating water and sugar until the sugar dissolves, then combine it with lemon juice, cranberry juice, and more water. Add some ice cubes and we’re done!

“What exactly makes pink lemonade pink?” This must be one of life’s endless perplexing questions. For example, “Why is the sky blue?” or “Why is the grass green?”. Even though the answer to the homemade pink lemonade recipe is much simpler (and less scientific), that doesn’t take away from the wonder of watching a few simple ingredients transform from bright yellow to sparkling reddish-pink juice.
If you’re wondering how to make your own lemonade, let my recipe demystify the process with four simple ingredients and a simple method. Furthermore, it can be used in a variety of ways, from a dessert on a sunny afternoon to the basis for a range of delicious cocktails as an evening aperitif.
They are both refreshing drinks made from lemon juice, simple syrup and water. But why is pink lemonade pink? Its distinctive rosy color comes from the addition of berries, including raspberries, strawberries, cranberry juice or pomegranate/grenadine syrup. Some even use watermelon or beet juice to achieve different shades.
The fruit is usually mashed and then strained before being added to lemon juice and the colors blend together. That’s why it turns pink. Additionally, depending on the berries you use, the flavor of the pink drink will change. Some will complement the lemon flavor rather than overpower it—especially raspberry or pomegranate—while strawberry or cranberry juice will give it a more intense berry flavor.
What Is Pink Lemonade, Exactly?
In case you were wondering, while pink lemons do exist, they are not used to make this pink drink. Legend has it that a carnival vendor named Pete Conklin invented the drink when he mistakenly brewed his own lemonade using pink water in his bathtub.
Optional add-ons/variations: For adult fun, substitute a few drops of vodka for some of the water. Or, for a non-alcoholic version, use Sprite or club soda. Swap the lemon for lime for a drink that’s perfect for you.
First, cut the lemon in half and juice it. To get the most juice, use a citrus juicer. If you don’t have one, follow my guide to getting the most juice from your lemons.
If you don’t have simple syrup on hand, here’s how to prepare it. Water and sugar in a 1:1 ratio are heated together in a pot until the sugar dissolves.

Chef’s Tip: It’s best to do this ahead of time so the syrup can cool or even be refrigerated—you can also store it in the refrigerator for a few weeks.
In a small bowl or jar, mash/mash the strawberries. If you wish, you can sieve the mashed strawberries so that the juice can be strained out. However, I love using the whole messy combination.
Finally, add the lemon juice, simple syrup, strawberries and cold water to a large pot and stir well. Taste the lemonade and adjust any ingredients as needed – a little more water or syrup, etc.
Add plenty of ice—either in a glass or in a jug. Add a few sprigs of mint and some lemon slices for garnish. Enjoy your fresh strawberry lemonade!

This lemon drink can be made ahead of time as it will keep in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. Be sure to stir before use.
You can also freeze some lemonade into ice cube trays and use it to cool future batches of lemonade for those hot summer days.
