What Socks Don’t Make Your Feet Stink?

As much as we love to swap tips and tricks to solve our biggest beauty dilemmas, there are some questions we may not feel comfortable asking our friends about, let alone Google without going incognito. don’t worry We have you covered. In this series, we’re tackling those embarrassing beauty questions by turning to experts in the field to get you the answers you need — minus any awkward feelings.

There’s an anxiety-inducing horror in removing your shoes at a friend’s house only to have a bad B.O. to throw into the air. Stinky feet can be one of the most embarrassing body odors, but it’s a lot more common than you think. Below, find out what causes smelly feet and how to get rid of the smell STAT.

Going sans socks is a common culprit for foot odor, but stench can also occur with them. This is because it’s not entirely about what’s on but what’s coming out of your feet (sorry for the visual). “Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is the main cause of smelly feet,” says Sophia Soloman, a board-certified podiatrist at Manhattan Foot Specialists in New York City. When feet sweat, they essentially create a tropical rainforest inside your shoes (especially between the dark, moist cracks of your toes), or the type of environment that causes odor and fungus to thrive in . Not infested with sweaty feet? According to Suzanne C. Fuchs, a board-certified podiatrist in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, smelly feet “can be aggravated by the type of shoes you wear, poor hygiene, or other foot issues such as fungal infections.” The upside of all this is that there are ways to make your soles smell better.

What’s Really Causing Your Feet To Stink

Nip hygiene that causes a stench in the bud and first look at your footwear. “I see a lot of people who like to wear shoes like boat shoes or loafers without socks,” notes Fuchs. “This is a bad idea because the moisture or sweat from your feet will get worse with the fabric and the friction in your shoe.” While sweaty feet can still occur, sweat-resistant socks help absorb excess moisture and can also reduce the amount of bacteria that live inside your sneakers. “I recommend socks that are anti-bacterial like those with copper or silver,” says Fuchs. She also suggests temperature-regulating fabrics (think: merino wool or nylon-polyester blends), since “cotton socks actually retain heat and moisture and cause increased sweating and the bacteria.” (Photo via Dmitry Belyaev/ Getty)

Then consider the way you wash your feet in the shower (or take a note if you don’t). According to Fuchs, even if you skip the shower, you should still scrub your feet once or twice a day with soap and water. “Don’t forget to dry thoroughly, especially between your legs,” she says. Blotting after rinsing helps keep moisture out of those bacteria-prone areas and can reduce the risk of smelly feet.

Another way to get rid of foot odor is to stock up on powders, sprays, and antiperspirants. When choosing a deodorizing product, reach for something that contains ingredients like moisture-absorbing white clay or arrowroot powder, as well as essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus to help improve the overall scent. Fat and the Moon’s Healing Foot Powder ($12) checks both of these boxes with a formula enhanced by white clay, black walnut shells, arrowroot powder, tea tree oil and lavender essential oil. Together these ingredients check the bacteria that cause the smell and protect against the formation of the fungus as a whole.

It’s a common, yet embarrassing, body odor, and it can make you ask yourself, “Why do my feet smell?”

Bromodosis is the medical term for excessively smelly feet. It is a common medical condition caused by an accumulation of sweat that results in the growth of bacteria on the skin.

Weird Reasons Why Your Feet Stink: Unveiling The Mysteries Of Pungent Paws

Your feet, like all of your skin, are covered in sweat glands. When your feet are covered in close-fitting shoes and you run around all day, your feet sweat. That sweat creates a prime environment for bacteria to grow, and their metabolic processes emit a certain odor.

it lives between the toes, thrives in a moist, salty environment, and produces a cheesy foot odor. That same bacteria is actually used in the cheese-making process for Muenster, Entrammes, and Limburger cheeses. So really, your feet don’t smell like cheese; the cheese smells like feet.

As a child of the 80s can remember, plastic shoes known as “jelly” were impressive smelly shoes. Although they were sandals they did not allow any air flow, which resulted in very sweaty feet.

Choose shoes designed for breathability. New styles have mesh portions that keep your feet cooler and increase airflow.

You may also want to consider alternating different pairs of shoes. Wearing the same pair every day can contribute to the bacteria colonies that thrive in them, but if you let them dry completely, the bacteria will not be able to survive in the dry conditions. Winter boots in particular tend to stink, so rotating pairs can help kill bacteria.

Wearing socks of any kind helps to reduce unpleasant odors because they soak up the sweat and keep it from passing through the shoe. You can wash socks much more easily than you can wash your shoes. To reduce foot odor, always wear socks when wearing closed shoes. (Wearing socks with sandals is neither necessary nor advisable from a fashion point of view.)

Regular cleaning and trimming of toenails can also help reduce odor. Be sure to clean under the toenails before trimming and cutting the nails. Consider using a cotton ball soaked in isopropyl alcohol to clean around your toes and nails before bed to kill bacteria and keep your feet dry.

“Thicker cotton or newer synthetics are better at absorbing sweat and wicking and evaporating,” says Kevin M. Wong, MD, Westmoreland Family Medicine-UPMC. “For some people, they may need to change socks during the workday.”

What’s Wrong With You…. Riddle And Answer

One easy treatment of bromodosis is daily foot washing. Paying special attention to the areas around and between the toes can help reduce bacteria. Scrub to remove dead skin, and then make sure your feet are completely dry before putting on your socks and shoes. You can follow this with an antiperspirant (same as you use on your arms) or foot powder to reduce sweating.

Removable insoles can also help reduce foot odor and some are made especially for that purpose. “Make sure you change them often,” advises Dr. Wong. “They are disposable and may have an anti-microbial feature to deter bacteria.”

You can also follow the bowling example and spray your shoes with disinfectant/deodorant spray. However, Dr. Wong adds, “Nothing is better than drying them completely.”

What Makes Your Feet Stink

If your foot odor is due to athlete’s foot, a fungal infection that can also cause foot odor, it can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams or sprays.

Reasons Why Your Feet Smell & What To Do About Them

It is important to keep your feet clean and dry to stop foot odor. Good foot hygiene includes regular washing, thorough drying, changing your socks daily, and drying your shoes between uses. Toenails are an often underestimated source of odor, it’s important to keep your toenails trimmed and clean to combat odor.

If you have tried your best to eliminate your foot odor, changed your shoes and socks, and washed them every day, and you still have an odor, it may be time to consult a podiatrist or primary care doctor. They can provide expert guidance on the next level of care.

The relationship with a patient and their primary care physician can be extremely valuable, and that is what you get with UPMC Primary Care.
