As Boyd, who appeared in the Michael Jordan documentary Last Dance and the Ken Burns-directed Muhammad Ali, writes in the introduction, “Rap is what you do, hip-hop is who you are.”
Hip-hop has nurtured and fed American culture—a new creation that expertly merges black culture and urban street life with the worlds of fashion, film, sports, politics, and contemporary art. And though its underground, DIY beginnings belied its influence, telling the story of contemporary American culture is what hip-hop is all about.

The breadth of his cultural references is astounding. Of course, hip-hop’s most commonly recognized key figures are all featured, including: Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, Outkast, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, Foxy Brown, and Kendrick Lamar; But his influence has historically been surrounded by a more diverse cast of characters, to name just a few: boxer Muhammad Ali – a skilled wordsmith who outwitted his opponents and used bold, elegant and black masculinity; modeled; Jean-Michel Basquiat – a remix master who brought anti-establishment graffiti from city streets to the canvas of the white art world; and Dapper Dan, a Harlem tailor who ran a 24-hour boutique during the ’80s, catering to gangsters, hustlers and later rappers who wanted to emulate him.
