Dozen Double Yolk Eggs – Occasionally, hens lay eggs with two yolks. This is relatively rare: it happens when a hen ovulates twice in quick succession, and the chance of finding a double-yolk egg is about one in 1,000. However, in a kitchen in Teddington, a suburb of London, in the United Kingdom, a 17-year-old found double yolks in every egg in a dozen boxes:

Double yolks have a certain meaning attached to them: in folklore they are associated with fertility and luck. Some people believe that finding a double fox predicts pregnancy or even twins; others believe it’s just a sign of general good luck.

There is less common wisdom about what it means to find 12 double yellows in a row. There are a few more stories of crazy double-yolk eggs: in recent years, one person found six in a row, and another 10. There are even 12 double yolk eggs in one box. It is also possible for a hen to lay eggs with more than two yolks. The record is 9.

* Update: This estimate is from here and was basically an extrapolation from a figure of 1:1000. However, due to the way eggs are packaged by weight, finding 12 double-yolk eggs in one carton may not be all that uncommon. A couple of people emailed to say they had the same experience.
Egg Yolk Recipes
There are a few factors that can increase the likelihood of finding double yolk eggs. First, some breeds are more likely to lay them than others. Second, such eggs are more likely to be produced by young, non-laying hens. Third, these eggs are heavier and more likely to be packed together – it would be much more surprising to find double yolk eggs in a carton of medium-sized eggs than in a carton of jumbo eggs.
A reader points to this BBC story as a good review of how to calculate the probability of finding a double-yolk ovary. The sad truth is that much more data would be needed to calculate the actual odds. However, it is still quite rare. If people occasionally find double eggs, it’s partly because of the sheer volume of eggs being produced – in the US alone, chickens produce billions of eggs each month.

I have read that this is due to an abnormality here and there in the egg that is considered normal.
I guess the question is, is a whole box of double-yolk eggs a “bad” thing or a “good” thing? I tend to go with “good” because it seems like a two-yoked egg has a lot more protein and nutrients. And yes, this omelet ended up tasting like a 12-egg omelet with half the whites thrown away.
Double yellowing occurs more often in the spring and in young or very old birds. Since commercial egg producers do not let their birds age, unless you are getting farm eggs, they are likely to be young birds.

When I was raising birds, it seemed to happen more often with brown eggs than with white eggs, but that’s just my experience. Some people try to breed for it, and it’s more common in some birds. It also makes it more profitable for young birds because the eggs are larger than usual for new layers. However, there are also significant disadvantages for birds. The eggs are not viable, almost always the egg fails to incubate, as if both were fertile, the egg is unable to support twins, and the rupture of one shell leads to the death of the other. Also, the eggs are larger, so a young bird lays larger eggs than it is physically ready to lay, and for an old bird, the eggs can become monstrous. This results in much higher bird mortality.
I’ve rarely had double yolks in commercial eggs, but this year it looks like something is in the water. Just last week I also had a dozen that 10 out of 12 were doubles. Just my luck, I was trying to make an angel food cake and didn’t want them. lol
Eggs are “under the candle”, visually inspected against a light source for viability. Grouping double-yolk eggs seems to be common, although I can’t find a source as to why this might be. I’ve heard about it anecdotally several times though.

If your eggs are from a commercial egg company like those common in the US, there are a couple of related factors that may have contributed to your double-yolk egg packaging.
First, commercial egg farms tend to raise chickens in graded flocks, where special growing conditions are applied so that all the chickens in a flock reach peak productivity and “retirement age” at roughly the same time. This has efficiency advantages, but it also means that certain chickens in a flock tend to be in the double yellow phase of their life cycle at the same time.
If eggs from the same flock are processed together, this increases the likelihood that individual egg cartons will contain multiple multi-yolk eggs during these phases.
This may not be a disadvantage from the point of view of the egg packer. One side effect of double yolks is that the eggs are larger than normal.
Why Does This Entire Carton Of Eggs Have 2 Yolks Each?
Fortunately, there is a market for larger than normal eggs. This leads us to another possible factor: especially large and large egg cartons have more double-yolk eggs. Anecdotally, I’ve found double-yolk eggs in almost every jumbo egg carton I’ve ever bought, and eight out of twelve cartons have doubled. Your twelve out of twelve is impressive though – and doubly so if they were regular sized eggs.
Some brands also package and market specifically in double yellow cardboard boxes, but I assume you would have noticed!
As mentioned in other answers and comments, hens that are not in the prime of their reproductive life have more ovulation “misfires” like double yolk eggs.
However, individual yolks are usually smaller than normal yolks. (Similarly, a human woman’s belly becomes larger with a twin pregnancy than with a singleton pregnancy, although twins tend to be slightly smaller at birth than the average singleton pregnancy.)
