Buddha Statues And Their Meaning

The Buddha, whose original name was Siddhartha Gautama, was the founder of Buddhism, a religion and system of thought that created a great culture throughout much of southern and eastern Asia. Buddha, meaning “awakened one” or “enlightened one” is a title not a name. In Hindu Dogma, the Buddha is said to be the 9th avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu.

The Buddha was the son of the noble Sakyas. He was married at the age of 16 and he lived in luxury and comfort with the hardships of life. At the age of 29, he realized that people are old, sick, and dying. He knew the sufferings of the world. He decided to give up the aristocratic life and became a traveling priest (saman) in search of the Truth.

Along with the two samanas he attained the wonderful states of supreme consciousness but he did not find the Truth. He continued his search and was joined by five priests in a forest near Uruvela, where he practiced magic and self-immolation for six years. As he fainted from weakness, he gave up all the persecutions to find his own path to Enlightenment. Rejecting the teachings of his age, through meditation he achieved Enlightenment, or true knowledge. There after the Buddha taught his disciples the dharma (truth) and the “Middle” a path between the world and the ultimate self-denial.

The essence of the Buddha’s early preaching was called the Four Noble Truths: 1) life is sorrow and suffering. 2) Suffering is a result of the human desire for pleasure, power, and existence; 3) if sorrow and pain cease, desire must cease; and 4) the way to end desire and suffering, the eightfold noble path – right thoughts, right thinking, right speech, right action, right life, right effort, right knowledge and direct entry. The realization of the truth of anatman (there is no eternal self) was taught to be essential for the state of liberation known as nirvana.
